What to Bring to Capture the Perfect Moments
Hey there, lovebirds! So, you’ve got that dreamy engagement photo shoot on the horizon—cue the excited squeals and Pinterest inspo deep dives! But before you jump headfirst into a whirlwind of ideas, let’s take a moment to talk about the unsung heroes of your shoot: the things you should bring along to ensure those photos truly sparkle with your unique love story.
A little bit of preparation goes a long way when it comes to infusing every shot with magic. From wardrobe options to bringing along special props that speak volumes about your journey together, it’s these little touches that’ll take your photoshoot from ‘nice’ to ‘OMG, can we frame this?!’
What props should I bring with me to an engagement shoot?
Did you know you can bring props to your photoshoot? Props can play a significant role in enhancing your engagement photos by adding depth and visual interest. Choose props that are sentimental or align with your relationship story and shared interests.
These treasures are like the punctuation marks in your love story, adding depth and character to every frame. Whether it’s the vintage camera that symbolizes your shared passion for photography or the handwritten letters that encapsulate your heartfelt vows, let each little item you bring with you whisper its tale, weaving seamlessly into the narrative of your love.
A few examples of props you and your partner can bring:
- Your rings
- The first gifts you ever gave each other
- Favorite books
- Love letters
- Family heirlooms
- Your pet (ok, not technically a prop, but they add a personal element to your photos!!)
- A memento from your proposal
- Musical instruments
- A blanket to sit on
What do I wear to my engagement shoot?
When it comes to choosing outfits for your engagement photoshoot, think of it as a chance to showcase your unique vibe as a couple.
Here are some tips to help you nail that picture-perfect look:
- Reflect Your Style: Your outfits should scream ‘you’! Whether you’re all about casual, cool, or boho chic, let your clothing reflect your personality and what makes you feel like your best selves.
- Coordinate, Don’t Match: While twinning can be cute, aim for outfits that complement each other instead of looking like you raided each other’s closets. Think of coordinating colors and styles that flow together seamlessly.
- Location, Location, Location: Consider where you’ll be striking those poses. Is it a beachside sunset or a cozy café corner? Pick colors and fabrics that complement the scenery and make you pop against the backdrop.
- Comfort is Key: Sure, those sky-high heels might look killer, but if you’re not feeling comfy, it’ll show in the photos. Opt for outfits that not only look good but also let you move and pose with little fuss.
Remember, your engagement photoshoot is all about capturing your love story, so let your outfits tell that tale loud and clear!
Bringing along a full change of clothes is optional, but keep in mind that it can add variety to your overall photoshoot (and make it look like you’ve had more than one!)
How to find the best location for engagement photos
Even though I am based in the Fraser Valley, I’m open to all types of locations for engagement shoots!
Picking the right location sets the stage for your love story to unfold in all its glory. Here are some of my best tips to help you scout out the dreamiest spot:
- Scout Ahead: Take some time to scope out potential locations before the big day. Check out different spots at different times of the day to see how the lighting plays out and what kind of backdrops you’ll have to work with. (This is something I enjoy doing so if you have an idea in mind, reach out and I’ll send options!)
- Outdoor vs. Indoor: Are you all about that outdoor adventure or do you prefer snuggling up indoors? Whatever floats your boat, make sure the location vibes with both of you. I love Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver during the spring months as all of the gardens bloom and the site offers so many gorgeous spots for portraits. I also love studios that offer a lot of variety like LaBella Studio in Port Coquitlam
- Get Permission: If you’ve got your heart set on a private location, make sure you get the green light beforehand. The last thing you need is unexpected interruptions crashing your photoshoot party!
Remember, the right location isn’t just about pretty backdrops—it’s about creating a setting that speaks to your love story and sets the mood for some seriously swoon-worthy photos.
Other tips for a successful photoshoot
To ensure a smooth and successful engagement photoshoot, it’s essential to be prepared with a small emergency kit of items that can come in handy.
In the past, some of my clients have brought along:
- Safety pins
- Tissues
- Lash glue
- Dog treats (in case you bring Fido along and he won’t look at the camera!)
- Compact mirror for makeup and hair touch-ups
- Small comb/hair brush for flyaways.
And hey, don’t hesitate to ask me if there’s something extra you’d like to bring with you! Trust me, it’ll make a world of difference in getting those perfect shots that truly tell your love story.
